A notarised translation is a translated document that has been notarised by a Notary Public. A notary is a public officer, usually a professional lawyer with 12 to 15 years of experience, responsible for authenticating the acts on behalf of his clients. He would witness and authenticate the required documents by signing, providing a statement with a ribbon and seal, known as the notarial certificate, which would accompany the translation.

Certified or a notarised translation is usually required by authorities when the original document is not written in the official language. It is a method for governments to ensure that translations are carried out truthfully, void of fraud and professionally in an official capacity. For instance, Singaporean government departments such as the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority, Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore and Ministry of Manpower will require notarised documents if they are not written in English.
